The Leicester Diabetes Centre has been praised at a prestigious national awards ceremony.

Type 2 diabetes prevention work, including the development of a nationally-adopted education programme, led by Professor Melanie Davies CBE was commended in the Prevention and Early Diagnosis category of the sixth annual QiC Diabetes awards.

The entry ‘Preventing diabetes by turning research into practice’ showcased a package of work on preventing Type 2 diabetes, including the Leicester Risk Score, research, the Let’s Prevent programme, a pilot project and becoming a partner in The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

The centre was also influential in the winning entry ‘Type 2 Diabetes: Know Your Risk’ by Diabetes UK, with an online version of a diabetes risk assessment on the charity’s website based on the Leicester Risk Score.

Bernie Stribling, a Director at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, who has been influential in the prevention work, said:

“It was thrilling to get national recognition for our strong body of work on preventing Type 2 diabetes, which has been years in the making.

“Our Let’s Prevent education programme has become one of the first interventions in the UK that demonstrates that a structured educational programme reduces the number of people with pre-diabetes who progress to Type 2 diabetes.”

The QiC Diabetes programme recognises, rewards and shares innovative practice which has demonstrated quality in diabetes management, education and services for people with diabetes and, or, their families.

The awards ceremony took place at Sanofi’s Guildford headquarters on Thursday, October 13.

There were more than 80 entries into the 15 categories, with judges once again given a tough job in selecting the winners among another crop of impressive examples of good practice.

QiC Diabetes is partnered by Sanofi Diabetes and supported by a host of organisations.

Simon O’Neill, Director of Health Intelligence and Professional Liaison at Diabetes UK, told the audience:

“These awards are a real opportunity to showcase and share the innovative work to improve diabetes care. You are all winners, you are all doing something for people with diabetes and that matters the most.”

The Leicester Diabetes Centre is an international centre of excellence in diabetes research, education and innovation and is led by Professor Davies CBE and Professor Kamlesh Khunti. Hosted at Leicester General Hospital, it is a partnership between the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the University of Leicester.
