Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) has been accredited as an International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Centre of Excellence for Diabetes Care for the eighth year running. This prestigious recognition highlights the exceptional standards of care, research, and education provided by LDC in the field of diabetes, multiple long-term conditions, and lifestyle as medicine.

IDF Centres of Excellence (CoE) are designated clinical or research institutes that form part of a voluntary international network. They offer specialised care and support to people with diabetes, helping them manage their condition for better health outcomes.

Accreditation as an IDF Centre of Excellence places LDC among a select group of 22 institutions worldwide that have demonstrated excellence in diabetes care.

Founded in 2009 as a partnership between University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and University of Leicester, LDC’s mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and long-term conditions and their carers, through research, education, and innovation.

Professor Melanie Davies CBE, Co-Director of LDC, said: “We are thrilled to receive this accreditation from the IDF. Being one of only three Centres of Excellence in Europe really puts Leicester on the map.

“It is a true testament of the teams’ unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation in diabetes research and education. We aim to provide hope for people living with diabetes and will continue to lead the way in transforming diabetes care through research and education, to improve outcomes worldwide.”

LDC’s research, education and implementation projects are supported by a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, digital experts, and community liaisons, who are actively involved in diabetes care, prevention, and advocacy. LDC has a state-of-the-art infrastructure to deliver world-leading research in a participant-centred environment.

In addition to its world-leading research into diabetes, LDC also offers high-quality education for healthcare professionals (HCPs) from its MSc in diabetes to more vocational shorter courses through its EDEN programme helping empower HCPs with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver high-quality diabetes care in organisations around the world.

Through the DESMOND programme, LDC designs, delivers, and embeds world-leading evidence-based education and support for people with or at risk of type 2 diabetes, and other long-term conditions. DESMOND continues to be delivered internationally by educators trained to deliver its programmes across the world.
