Experts from Leicester Diabetes Centre to speak at Primary Care Diabetes Society Conference

Three experts from Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) will be speaking at the 20th National Primary Care Diabetes Society (PCDS) conference in Birmingham on 6 and 7 November. The free-to-attend conference aims to support primary care professionals in delivering high-quality, clinically effective care to people living with diabetes.

This year’s conference theme is ‘Diabetes Care in the Age of Multiple Long-Term Conditions.’ There will be a focus on the need for holistic care to support people with long-term conditions and how people working in primary care can help reduce health inequalities.

LDC experts will be speaking at the following conference sessions:

  • Kamlesh Khunti, Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine, will be speaking about ‘Multiple long-term conditions’ from 10:10-10:45am on Wednesday 6 November. Professor Khunti’s presentation will cover the implications of multiple long-term conditions for the individual, how healthcare systems need to adapt and tailoring care.

  • Vicki Alabraba, Education and Research Associate and Diabetes Specialist Nurse, will be delivering ‘Masterclass 2: Type 3c (pancreatogenic) diabetes’. Vicki will deliver this alongside Clare Hambling, GP, and National Clinical Director of Diabetes & Obesity for NHS England, between 11:15 am-12:00pm and 2:00- 2:50pm during the masterclass rotations on Wednesday 6 November. The masterclass will cover the recognition, diagnosis, referral, and management of type 3c diabetes.

  • Professor Sam Seidu, Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Cardio-metabolic Medicine, will be leading ‘Masterclass 8: Health inequalities’. Professor Seidu will deliver this masterclass during the 11.20am-12.05pm and 12.10-12.55pm rotations on Thursday 7 November. This masterclass will involve discussion on the solutions to health inequalities and what primary care professionals can do in practice.

We hope you can attend their sessions.

On Wednesday 6 November, Alison Northern, LDC Implementation Lead, and Laura Willcocks, Assistant Director Integration, Education, and Innovation, can be found at the LDC stall ready to answer any questions.

Throughout the conference in the exhibition hall, you will have the opportunity to view two posters that have been produced by members of the DESMOND education team on the following topics:

  • Real-World Impact of Digital Type 2 Diabetes Management Education for Wales

  • How acceptable is self-directed digital type 2 diabetes education in the current climate?

Founded in 2009 as a partnership between University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and University of Leicester, LDC’s mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and long-term conditions and their carers, through research, education, and innovation.
