The EDEN education team has visited Gibraltar to deliver bespoke diabetes training and updates to over 70 healthcare professionals based on the Rock. These HCPs included healthcare assistants, ambulance staff, qualified nurses, and doctors, consultants and GPs.

The organisers approached the award-winning EDEN team during the Diabetes UK Conference last year and expressed their interest in having a bespoke training package created for the HCPs based on Gibraltar. Continuing communication through a series of emails and telephone calls, the EDEN team created the package before travelling to Gibraltar to deliver the training over the course of 4 days.

The courses attracted participants from numerous healthcare teams on Gibraltar, including the primary care centre, elderly care wards, the ambulance crew, the day surgery unit, laboratory staff, obstetrics, medical and surgical units, and the district nurse team.

The course itself covered the many practical aspects of diabetes, such as glucose monitoring, quality assurance, the effects of foods, hypo and hyperglycaemia updates as well as information about newer therapies. Specialist sessions on diabetes care in pregnancy and diabetes and renal disease were also delivered. The participants evaluated the courses very highly, and many of them commented on the educators’ professionalism and the course content.

Neil F Costa, the Minister for Health, Care and Justice, echoed the participants’ sentiments, adding:

‘We look forward to seeing [the EDEN team] again, hopefully next year, so that the people who were unable to attend training this year can benefit from the valuable diabetes update.’

EDEN educator Geri Gray said:

‘Delegates attended both from secondary and primary care, which was a positive experience for both facilitators and delegates. The style of EDEN positively encourages interaction and it was fulfilling as educators to observe such enthusiastic interaction from the delegates in all sessions. The sharing of ideas and resources through networking proved useful for both educators and delegates, and our communication links with Gibraltar have continued.’

With diabetes figures constantly on the rise, it is important that healthcare professionals are updated about new developments in diabetes, so that they can provide effective advice, care and management to the public. By delivering bespoke EDEN training to HCPs on Gibraltar, the organisers are ensuring that the public are being given up-to-date information with regards to the risks of diabetes and its prevention and treatment.
