A practice nurse who has embarked on a teaching career has been presented with a top accolade for bringing “education to life”.

Fiona Munday, Education and Research Associate, Effective Diabetes Education Now (EDEN), has picked up the Quality in Care (QiC) Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award 2022.

The accolade was presented to Fiona last week during the annual QiC Awards Ceremony, which was held at Sanofi’s UK headquarters in Reading.

The Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award recognises an individual who has been seen as a champion for education in their area.

Fiona won the prestigious award for “educating with excellence” and for “inspiring all who participate”.

Since 2017, Fiona has designed, developed and delivered education programmes to healthcare professionals both nationally and internationally.

She said: “I felt so honoured and proud to be nominated for this award, but to win was the happiest shock of all. I am still pinching myself. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for me.

“This could not have been achieved without the help of my EDEN family. We love what we do, and we work towards the same goal – to help busy healthcare professionals gain confidence, for the ultimate benefit of people living with diabetes. Winning this award is really a dream come true for me.”

Laura Willcocks, Lead for Healthcare Professional Education and Training, EDEN, said: “I was lucky to appoint Fiona and subsequently work with her for the last five years.

“There are many ways that make her special - the way she uses her expertise in practice nursing to bring education to life, the way that she can draw a group together, bringing fun and instilling knowledge at the same time.”

She added: “As well she truly supports and empowers healthcare professionals to have both belief and confidence to make a vital difference to people living with diabetes.

“She is respected by all who meet her and is always thinking of how we can create new programmes of education to ensure we are making a real difference in research, education and innovation at EDEN and the Leicester Diabetes Centre.”

QiC Diabetes recognises initiatives that improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes, as judged by the NHS, people with diabetes and industry.

This year, the awards celebrated the exceptional work that has been undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jessamy Baird, Country Lead and Head of General Medicines for Sanofi in UK and Ireland, said: “It is truly a real honour to support the QiC awards as they recognise and reward our NHS heroes who continuously go above and beyond to improve the lives of people with diabetes with such passion, commitment and enthusiasm.”
