Co-Director of the LDC chairs panel of accomplished women from three continents
In October 2023, Co-Director of the Leicester Diabetes Centre, Professor Melanie Davies chaired The diaTribe Foundation’s tenth annual reception and panel discussion at European Association for the Study of Diabetes Conference in Hamburg, Germany. The diaTribe Foundation was founded with a mission to improve the lives of people with diabetes and prediabetes and to advocate for action.
The panel covered several important topics related to type 2 diabetes (T2D). These included the latest therapies for producing disease-modifying weight loss without bariatric surgery, advancements in long-acting insulins, and dual and triple agonists for better glucose management and the prevention of complications. The panel also discussed the role of technology and Time in Range for managing T2D, as well as issues of access and social determinants of health in addressing the larger T2D epidemic.
Melanie explains: “I had the privilege of chairing an in-depth discussion among a panel of accomplished women in the field, hailing from three different continents.”
The group of international, all women panellists included Dr. Roberta Lamptey (Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana), Dr. Claire Meek (University of Cambridge, UK), Dr. Nisa Maruthur (Johns Hopkins University, USA), Dr. Athena Philis-Tsimikas (Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, USA), and Dr. Tsvetalina Tankova (Medical University, Sofia, Bulgaria).
Melanie adds: “We are excited to announce that Professor Claire Meek will be joining the Leicester Diabetes Centre on 1 December as an Honorary Consultant in Chemical Pathology and Diabetes in Pregnancy.”
