Breaking barriers in diabetes care: LDC experts publish consensus on continuous glucose monitoring
A recent publication in Diabetic Medicine titled 'Removing barriers to management of adults with type 2 diabetes on insulin using continuous glucose monitoring in UK primary care practice: An expert consensus' features significant contributions from Samuel Seidu, Professor in Primary Care Diabetes and Cardio-metabolic Medicine at Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) and Vice-Chair for Research at Primary Care Diabetes Europe (PCDE), and James Ridgeway, Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Research Associate at LDC.
The paper addresses the challenges faced in managing adults with type 2 diabetes on insulin therapy and explores the role of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in enhancing patient care within UK primary care settings. The expert consensus aims to identify and propose solutions to barriers hindering the effective use of CGM, thereby improving clinical outcomes for patients.
The study identifies barriers to CGM use in type 2 diabetes care, including limited access, insufficient training, and low patient awareness. It recommends enhancing professional education, improving access, and boosting patient support to maximise CGM’s benefits, such as better glucose control and fewer hypoglycemic episodes.
