Leicester Diabetes Centre experts to share groundbreaking research at Diabetes UK conference

Experts from the Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) will be sharing their latest research and insights at this year’s Diabetes UK Professional Conference. Taking place from 26–28 February at the SEC in Glasgow, the conference is the UK's largest gathering dedicated to diabetes care, bringing together clinicians, researchers, and scientists to explore the latest advancements in the field. 

As a globally recognised hub for diabetes research, education, and innovation, LDC is home to world-class experts driving progress in diabetes care. Since opening in 2012, it has grown into the UK’s largest clinical diabetes research centre, pioneering groundbreaking studies, clinical trials, and education programmes. One of only three International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Centres of Excellence in Europe, LDC continues to shape the future of diabetes management and treatment.

Wednesday 26 February 

Claire Meek, Professor of Chemical Pathology and Diabetes in Pregnancy, will Co-Chair the “Diabetic Medicine symposium: Early onset type 2 diabetes in pregnancy and preconception”, which will take place from 11:50 – 12:50 in Lomond.   

James Ridgeway, Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Research Associate, will participate in a panel discussion session titled: “Multidisciplinary team working: Is it the skillset or the title?” from 16:15 - 17:45 in Hall 5. James will bring perspectives on lived experiences. 

Molly Caba, Research Assistant, will deliver an oral presentation titled: “Type 2 Diabetes Risk Communication Following a Diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Qualitative Service Evaluation” during the Diabetes UK Education and Self-management Award session in Boisdale, from 12:05 - 12:20. 

 

Thursday 27 February 

Sam Seidu, Professor in Primary Care, Diabetes and Cardio-metabolic Medicine, will be participating in the session “Complex cases in between primary and secondary care”, as a facilitator, which takes place from 11:15-12:15 in Dochart. 

Professor Claire Meek will chair the session “What is the best diet for women with diabetes in pregnancy” in Hall 5 from 16:45 – 18:15. During this session, Professor Meek will present on the topic of: “Cutting Calories is Most Important” from 17:15 -1735. 

Tom Yates, Professor of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior and Health, will be delivering a talk titled: “Diabetes and Sleep” from 16:50 - 17:15 as part of the Diabetes and Lifestyle session in M1. 

Dr Joe Henson, Research Associate, who will be delivering an oral presentation titled: “Physical activity, glycaemic control and chronotype: Is it all in the timing?” during the Clinical science 2 session in Boisdale from 11.30 - 11.45. 

 

Friday 28 February 

Kamlesh Khunti, Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine, will be presenting: “Disparities and evidence-based solutions” from 9:00 - 9:20 in Hall 5. 

Professor Khunti will also participate in the session paying tribute to Dr Bob Young, from 9:45 - 10:35, in Hall 5. 

Professor Sam Seidu will co-present “Case discussions” at 14:15 as part of the wider session titled Medico legal matters in diabetes care in Alsh. 

 

The following posters created by LDC experts will be presented on Thursday 27 February, from 10.30 in the Exhibition Hall: 

  • Molly Caba, Research Assistant will present “Type 2 Diabetes Risk Communication Following a Diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Qualitative Service Evaluation”

  • Panna Wilson, Education and Research Facilitator, will present the poster “Establishing effective and appropriate invitation and engagement strategies for public involvement with South Asian and Black African and Caribbean communities.” 

  • Erica Richardson, Nurse Lecturer and Lead Diabetes Research Nurse, will present the poster “See it. Touch it. Hear it. Read it: Using VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinaesthetic) principles to enhance learning experiences for health care professionals in ever changing environment of type 1 diabetes management.” 

 

The following posters will be presented at 13.00 on Friday 28 February in the Exhibition Hall: 

  • Molly Caba, Research Assistant will present: “The Use of Theory and Behaviors Change Techniques for the Development of Behaviors Change Interventions for Individuals with Diabetes-Related Foot Ulcers and/or Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review”  

  • Alison Northern, LDC Implementation Lead, will present both her own poster: "Who is Accessing Self-Directed Digital Type 2 Diabetes Education and is it Acceptable to Them?"  

  • Alison will also present a poster by Julia Burdon, Education and Research Associate, titled: “Adapting the Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed (DESMOND) Programme to Support People who are Blind of Partially Sighted.”  

  • Panna Wilson, Education and Research Facilitator, will present the poster “Improving digital support for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) from the South Asian and Black African and Caribbean communities: summary from Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) & Stakeholders.” 

  • Joe Henson, Research Associate, will present a poster titled: “Physical activity, glycaemic control and chronotype: Is it all in the timing?” 

  • Laura Willcocks, Assistant Director Integration, Education and Innovation will present: “Enhancing the Primary Care Workforce in Continuous Glucose Monitoring: Insights from a Bespoke Education Programme” on behalf of James Ridgeway, Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Research Associate poster.
