NEW: Empowering Communities
A new programme to support the prevention of type 2 diabetes through community champions throughout Leicester
Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland has a diabetes prevalence rate of nearly 8%, with the Midlands region representing the highest prevalence of diabetes in England, according to figures released by NHS Digital in 2019.
Type 2 diabetes prevention continues to be a major priority and is at the heart of the NHS Long Term Plan. At the Leicester Diabetes Centre we believe that everyone in our communities should have access to the right tools and support.
Empowering Communities is a unique type 2 diabetes prevention programme, which aims to reach out to all communities through recognised community champions.
Community champions represent a wide range of community organisations, workplaces and houses of faith. They are invited to attend training workshops, which will equip them with the knowledge and skills to empower their communities and promote health and wellbeing.
Empowering Communities
The programme aims to train community champions to:
Promote health and wellbeing to peers
Offer and screen for type 2 diabetes risk
Signpost peers to other resources which may help them live a healthier lifestyle
