NEW VIRTUAL WARD GUIDANCE: From National Inpatient Diabetes COVID-19 Response GROUP
Leicester was again involved in the publishing of new national guidance on ensuring basic and secure diabetes services being maintained during the coronavirus pandemic.
The new document titled ‘Hyperglycaemia/Diabetes Guidance for People with COVID-19 Infections Managed in a Virtual Ward: A guide for Healthcare Professionals’ is available below with the previously published resources.
The National Inpatient Diabetes COVID-19 Response Group, which has been set up to support diabetes teams in their reorganisation. Dr Kath Higgins, who is the diabetes inpatient lead at the University Hospitals of Leicester and Dr Ehtasham Ahmad, Clinical Research Fellow, were part of the team involved in the creation of the documents and was supported by the LDC Creative Team.

The clinical guidance in these documents has been created using insight from clinical leads across the UK, and in particular in collaboration with the London Inpatient Diabetes Network – COVID-19. The guidance is for diabetes specialist teams, as well as those involved in delivering care to people with diabetes in a hospital setting.
Professor Rayman MBE, Chair of the National Diabetes Inpatient COVID Response Team, said:
“As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic all clinical services will be working differently for the foreseeable future. These documents are intended for those involved in delivering and redesigning diabetes services during this pandemic. They recognise the importance of maintaining certain elements of the diabetes service which will be essential in reducing the burden on hospitals and supporting inpatient teams.”
