Injectable Therapies Patient Education Programme

The Leicester Diabetes Centre Injectable Therapies patient education programme is available for healthcare organisations to support people living with type 2 diabetes on Insulin or GLP-1 therapy.

The Injectable Therapies programme has been designed for people living with type 2 diabetes to have a better understanding of glycaemic control and increase knowledge and confidence to manage their diabetes. The Injectable Therapies programme consists of four patient group sessions: one core session and three topic specific sessions.

For those who wish to offer the Injectable Therapies programme to their patients, this will mean:

  • Attending facilitator training – two-days for most, reduced to one-day if you/your staff are already trained in another Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) patient programme

  • Access to the Injectable Therapies digital portal that contains all the resources required to deliver the Injectable Therapies group sessions, either virtually or in-person.

If you are interested in offering the Injectable Therapies programme to your patients, please book on to one of our Facilitator training days, available to view in the below training calendar. Click on this application form to book on.

Annette Routledge,  Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist for North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, whose team delivers the programme in their area said: "In North Cumbria nearly all GP practices support people living with type 2 diabetes to commence insulin. Once people are commenced on insulin it can be challenging for practice teams to have the time to have detailed discussions around insulin dose adjustment.

"People living with type 2 diabetes are now referred to the Injectable Therapies Programme to fully develop skills around insulin dose adjustment and to revise the education initially given on commencing insulin in their practice. This approach not only supports people living with diabetes to become skilled with their self-management, it reduces their need for referral to the Specialist Diabetes Team. Members of practice teams report becoming much more confident about supporting people commencing insulin by observing the Injectable Therapies course."

Feedback from people living with diabetes who have been on the course:

  • “Personally, they changed all my medications and have helped me to go from 67% time in range on my blood glucose levels to 98% this week. Throughout the course, and with the knowledge provided, they have empowered me to be able to take much better control of my condition.”

  • “I truly believe that the course I attended will be a lifesaver. Three full days of education, analysis, group therapy, fun (yes, fun!) and no judgment. Only help and support.”

  • “Of the 10 or 12 or so attendees I would think that the medications were altered for most of us. Reviewing the results over the period from the first day to the last (a span of 4 weeks in between) was impressive as nearly all had improved readings and every one of us walked out knowing significantly more about our conditions and how to manage it.”
